iOS 14 Edition in the Works: Buy Now to Get a Free Update

Just a quick note to let you know the status of the book.

Apple has released iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, and I’m hard at work on the eighth edition of iOS Access for All, which will cover all of the new features related to accessibility, along with everything found in previous editions. As I’ve done in the past, I’m offering a free update to anyone who buys the book from now until I release the iOS 14 edition. When you buy the ePub, PDF or combo edition from this Web site, you’ll get the current release. And you’ll receive an email when the iOS 14 edition is ready, with a link to download a brand-new book, in the format you’ve already chosen. Unfortunately, I can’t offer this free update to those who buy through the Apple Books Store.

You can keep up with my writing progress on Twitter. I’m also taking suggestions for apps you would like to see covered in Chapter 11, which is all about great third-party apps that are accessible. Send them to me on Twitter, or leave a comment here.

I hope to release the new book in November. Apple is likely to announce new iPhones before then, and I want to include information about them in the update.

Thanks as always to those who support my work, and encourage me each year!

A Great Big Update: iOS 13 Edition Released

I’m thrilled to announce the release of iOS Access for All: Your Comprehensive Guide to Accessibility for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch (iOS 13 Edition). This is the seventh edition of my book, and it’s fully updated for iOS 13.2. The book has grown along with Apple’s mobile software – it’s just shy of 184,000 words, and includes 11 chapters. But more important than word or page count, iOS Access for All remains the most comprehensive iOS accessibility resource anywhere!

iOS Access for All guides you step-by-step through Apple tools designed or people with blindness, low-vision, hearing impairments, and motor disabilities. Readers also learn how to make the most of all apps installed by Apple, along with iOS. You will also find reviews of over 100 outstanding App Store apps that happen to be accessible.

  • New chapter, and streamlined organization: For the iOS 13 edition, there’s a brand-new chapter focusing exclusively on iPadOS, a version of iOS that makes the most of the power and extra screen real estate on Apple’s tablets. Other chapters have been moved or reorganized to better address the growing iOS feature set.
  • Focus on new accessibility features: From Voice Control to Dark Mode; Commands for VoiceOver to expanded accessible setup options, iOS 13 is a big release for accessibility, and this edition covers all of it in detail.
  • More for the mainstream: Important new features in iOS 13 include new text editing gestures, quick path typing (VoiceOver accessible, by the way), beefed-up Shortcuts, redesigned share sheets, changes to location services, and lots more. The new book puts it all into an accessible context.
  • Apps with new faces: Apple has updated a number of the apps it installs along with iOS, In some cases, that means accessibility improvements. Check out the redesigned Reminders, along with significantly updated Files, Maps, and Notes, and all the rest, too.

Get the book in ePub or PDF format for $25US from this site. You can also purchase it from the Apple Books Store. This site has lots more info, including a sample chapter, complete table of contents and testimonials from readers. And read my Welcome post.

Announcing The iOS 13 Edition: The Biggest Book Yet

I’m working hard on an updated edition of iOS Access for All: Your Comprehensive Guide to Accessibility for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. iOS 13 is a major update for Apple’s mobile OS, and so, the book is bigger, too. And I’m taking the opportunity to rearrange some existing elements to better organize my coverage of both accessibility features, and the rest of what’s new in iOS. There’s one completely new chapter, covering iPadOS, and significantly expanded coverage in several others.

Many of you have already downloaded iOS 13, and even purchased new iPhones or iPads. So where’s the new book, you’re wondering. Truth is, a book this size takes a while to write, edit, check for accuracy, and update based on last-minute changes made to software as it ships. I expect to release iOS Access for All (iOS 13 edition) in mid-November.

As in years past, I want to be sure that anyone who wants a copy of the new book can get it as soon as it’s ready. So, if you buy the iOS 12 edition between now and the day I release the iOS 13 edition, I’ll send the new book to you free. Unfortunately, I can’t offer this deal if you buy the book via the Apple Book Store.

Thank you to the many loyal readers who have purchased multiple editions of iOS Access for All over the years. And if you’re someone who skips a version now and then, let me tell you; this is the year to get a book!

Finally, people have expressed interest in having both the ePub and PDF editions of the book, for one price. I’ll add that option when the iOS 13 book is ready. For $30, you’ll have access to a single zip archive containing both. So if you want both formats, wait for November and the new edition. If you buy before then, you’ll receive your choice of ePub of PDF.
